This week Web Savvy Marketing became a community sponsor for the 2013 PressNomics 2 conference. In my mind it is money worth spent, because PressNomics attendees are the future of WordPress.
What started out as a small, open source blogging package has morphed into a huge ecosystem that now drives a substantial part of the internet. From small businesses to major organizations and news outlets, WordPress has grown up and it is a powerhouse. While many bloggers still operate on free themes and plugins, larger WordPress users are embracing the premium model. The commercial side of WordPress is growing and growing fast. Premium theme and plugin developers are building excellent code and cultivating a self-sustaining environment.
Unlike traditional WordCamps, PressNomics is an event designed around the commercial side of WordPress. Commercial refers to those of us who have built businesses around WordPress and who have thrived by doing so. PressNomics is a time for us to learn, discuss, and collaborate with other developers. In many instances we could be considered direct competitors, but I doubt any of us really care. We openly discuss what we do and how we do it because we do not fear each other. There is enough customer demand to fill all of our project calendars so your competitor is not the enemy. In the land of WordPress, a competitor is your equal and you embrace their work, their code, and their businesses. You learn from and support each other because WordPress was built on collaboration. It is the collaborative approach that helps improve the WordPress core, the plugins, the theme, and the entire WordPress community.
Last year at PressNomics I was able to meet the people behind the code. Plugin developers, theme developers, hosting companies, and security rock stars. This interaction solidified our own efforts and gave me an opportunity to personalize many virtual relationships I had with other WordPress developers. The experience was invaluable to me. I left feeling energized and excited about my future and that of our community.
If you’re considering attending PressNomics in 2013 I strongly encourage you to make it happen. It will be every bit worth your time and money spent.
I view my attendance and our sponsorship as an investment in my future, our company’s future, and the future of our WordPress ecosystem. It is the people behind WordPress that make it unique and they are the true core that will continue to drive it forward. An event like PressNomics pushes WordPress into warp drive.
