Marketers and bloggers need to be aware of the interconnection of website hosting and SEO. The correlation of strong website hosting and SEO is many times overlooked and even I'm at fault of this oversight. Or I was at fault. I was reminded of it this month when I moved a website from one hosting company to another. My Recent Experience With Website Hosting and SEO In late 2015 Liquid Web announced the release of their managed WordPress hosting offering. I've been following Liquid Web and ... Read More

SEO is a Process and Not a Plugin
I recently had the pleasure of speaking about search engine optimization at WordCamp Ann Arbor and WordCamp Dallas Fort Worth. There was one focal point I wanted to hit home at both conferences: SEO isn’t a plugin or a green dot. SEO is a process. So many times WordPress users get caught up with installing plugins and chasing a green dot of approval. Don’t get me wrong. I think the Yoast team and their SEO plugins are awesome. It’s the way WordPress users implement the plugins that I find ... Read More
WordCamp Ann Arbor’s WordCamp WarmUp
This last week I had the pleasure of attending WordCamp Ann Arbor and organizing the WordCamp WarmUp event. I spent Thursday through Sunday in Ann Arbor and the time flew by quicker then I thought was possible. Thursday started with an airport run to pick up some iThemes folks then we were off to WordCamp WarmUp that evening. My Friday included two business panels and one SEO lunch. The speaker dinner was that evening, but I was a little too pooped to attend. Saturday continued with me ... Read More
The Winning Combination of Social Media and an Authentic Voice
This weekend the Kent County Sheriff Department posted a recruitment video to their Facebook page. The video was supposed to be a 20 second clip inviting people to apply for 911 openings. Kate, the woman in the video, became a little camera shy and the recording session had almost an hour worth of footage and bloopers. Joel, their savvy social media guy, decided to create a video that blended Kate's professional footage and some of her mistakes. While the department's overall engagement is ... Read More

The SEO Power of a 301 Redirect
I’m a huge fan of protecting a page’s SEO value with 301 redirects. For a long time I knew a 301 redirect would not only redirect traffic, it would also pass SEO value. I just didn’t quite have precise data to prove the massive value of a 301 redirect. If you are unfamiliar with this SEO tool, you can learn more about their usage in a post I recently wrote titled Upgrading Your Website? Don’t Forget 301 Redirects or You’ll Be Sorry. They are powerful, so you'll want to educate yourself on ... Read More
The Value of Content Before Website Design
I’m a strong believer in preparing website content before initiating graphic design and this applies to both websites and blogs. Some will argue with me, but I’ll fight this battle and dig in because I know content before website design is the right approach. I believe: Strong website design extends past colors, fonts, and layout boxes. Strong design focuses on the user. Website design should be crafted around the user, their needs, and the desired outcome of a website visit. It should be ... Read More
